With the accelerating power needs of consumer electronic devices, the high energy density of fuel cells makes them competitive with batteries. Taking advantage of an inherently high cost tolerance in the portable market, low-temperature micro fuel cells fed by organic liquids could be the best option to meet current and future market requirements. Among fuel candidates, nontoxic formic acid appears as a good alternative to methanol. Recent successful strategies employing either homogeneous or solid catalysts for formic acid electro-oxidation at room temperature are presented.
