Fuel Cells Newsletter #7 – February, 2012Pragma Industries

Introduction

Plenty of great news this month!
We are proud to present a bunch of new products on our website: new fuel cell systems, new head-turning applications for teaching fuel cell systems. And there’s more to come very soon…
Another great science note from Dr. Lepiller has been made available online. This time, she publishes about the use of formic acid as direct fuel for fuel cell. The fuel cell specialists will be interested.
Don’t forget to check our Facebook account as we plushised the pictures of the 2011 past events.

Research and Development Focus

Direct formic acid oxidation for liquid-fed PEM fuel cells
With the accelerating power needs of consumer electronic devices, the high energy density of fuel cells makes them competitive with batteries. Taking advantage of an inherently high cost tolerance in the portable market, low-temperature micro fuel cells fed by organic liquids could be the best option to meet current and future market requirements. Among fuel candidates, nontoxic formic acid appears as a good alternative to methanol. Recent successful strategies employing either homogeneous or solid catalysts for formic acid electro-oxidation at room temperature are presented.
